Copenhagen – the city by the sea

Copenhagen is an old city – Bishop Absalon was given the lands here over 800 years ago. He constructed a fortification on a tiny island just off the coast to protect the small fishing village of Havn which is part of the area known today as Medieval Copenhagen. Copenhagen has experienced much since then. There have been battles, fires, the Reformation and kings who settled here and established Copenhagen as the capital.  All have played a part in changing the face of Copenhagen. Christian IV expanded the city and made Copenhagen into a true capital with castles and towers. New areas were built and the old defence embankments were demolished in the mid 19th century. Copenhagen opened up and spread rapidly over its old boundaries. Today, there are parks on the site of the old defence embankments. The city is continuously expanding, with new areas being developed on the old industrial sites and along the harbour front.

Copenhagen is a beautiful old city. In contrast with other capitals, there are very few sky-scrapers. Strolling though the city’s streets and old squares, one is constantly in touch with the weather, the sky and light. There is a modern shopping district, extending throughout the old medieval parts. The city has been awarded the title of “Best Cruise Ship Destination” and is highly rated on the list for conference facilities. There are also exciting art galleries, exhibitions, museums, theatres and a new opera house. Copenhagen is the birthplace of the physicist Niels Bohr, and where Hans Christian Andersen sought his fortune at the age of 14, and where the philosopher Søren Kirkegaard spent his entire life.
